Ways to Enjoy Minneapolis Rivers and Lakes All Winter Long

For anyone who loves spending time outdoors, Minneapolis is a great place to be all year long, even during the winter. When you live in one of the homes in Minneapolis MN and the surrounding area, you’ll be ideally located to enjoy all sorts of activities on and around the area’s 22 lakes and the Mississippi River.

You’ll find a fantastic variety of trails around the many lakes, and plenty of them are navigable with just a good pair of boots. However, for added fun and adventure, try snowshoeing, where you can escape the crowds and really enjoy the beauty of nature. A great spot to snowshoe is Minnehaha Creek. There are 22 miles of creek that run from Lake Minnetonka to Minnehaha Falls. Another option is the parkland that runs along both sides of the river at the Mississippi River Gorge Regional Park.

In addition to snowshoeing, cross-country skiing is a popular activity. Put on some cross-country skis and head out along the many lake trails. You can start with the lakeside cross-country skiing trails along the shore of Lake Hiawatha in the Hiawatha Regional Park. For a fantastic five-mile cross-country ski adventure, try the Chain of Lakes Trail that offers a continuous trail around and across Brownie Lake, Cedar Lake, and Lake of Isles.

Outdoor ice skating is always a fun choice and there’s no shortage of opportunities. There are typically a number of skating rinks set up on athletic fields in municipal parks. For lake skating, when the ice is thick enough, people typically head to Lake Nokomis Park, Powderhorn Park, and Lake of the Isles Park. Skating is usually free, though there’s a small charge for skate rental, and rinks are lit from 4:30 to 9 pm so you can skate into the evening.

Take your skating to the next level with pond hockey. Similar to ice hockey (but with less physical contact), pond hockey is played on natural bodies of water with two teams of four and no goalies. Minneapolis Parks & Rec sponsors recreational leagues, and you’ll find pickup games at the Kenny Park and Nokomis Park outdoor ice rinks. Go along just to watch, even if you don’t play!

It’s not all sports all the time. Enjoy the stunning scenery of the frozen Minnehaha Falls, which is excellent for those who enjoy photography. If you want to enjoy the beauty of the frozen lakes and Mississippi River, but from a warmer vantage point, you’ll find a variety of restaurants offering great views and delicious food. Cafe Lurcat, Owamni, and Urban Eatery Minneapolis are just a few of the places where you can enjoy a meal with a view.

Indoors and out, the many lakes and rivers of Minneapolis offer enjoyment all year long. If you choose one of our homes in Minneapolis MN and the surrounding area, you will have easy access to these activities and a warm, wonderful home to return to at the end of the day.
