Tips to Reduce Stress When Planning Your Long-Distance Move

There are a number of reasons why people make long-distance moves. Often they’re to be closer to family, other times they come as a result of a new job. Particularly with new jobs, you may find yourself having to move suddenly, which adds to the stress of any move. Fortunately, if you’re looking at homes in Woodbury MN and the surrounding area, we have some move-in ready new homes that will be perfect for you. To help you plan your big move, here are a few tips to make it a little less stressful.

While you may not be able to control the month in which you move, you may be able to control the weeks. Your best bet is to move off-season, which is October through May. If that’s beyond your control, at least try to avoid the first and last weeks of the month. A mid-month move tends to be easier to schedule and afford.

Packing is obviously one of the most time-consuming and frustrating elements of moving. It really does help to be ruthless in what you choose to take with you. Start life in your brand new home with only the things you need and love. This is a great time to get rid of clutter that you don’t need or use anymore. From clothing to kitchen gear, if it’s just taking up space and doesn’t get used, go ahead and sell, donate, recycle, or throw it out. Plus, by getting rid of things you don’t need, you’ll have less to unpack and it will be easier to find a home for everything.

You also want to make sure you have a good mover. While you can choose to load up a truck and move it on your own, for long-distance moves, most people prefer a service that at least picks up and delivers everything. There are services that will do the packing for you, as well, though obviously they will cost more. Make sure you get three or four quotes from reputable movers to find the best option for you.

It’s important to get multiple quotes, because you need to stay on top of your budget. Purchasing a home is already expensive, and a long-distance move adds further expenses. You’ll also need to budget for tipping each of the movers, which can be $40-100 per mover, depending on the distance. Be sure to do your research to determine the appropriate amount. You may also want to include moving insurance, especially if you have particularly valuable items. By law, movers doing out-of-state moves must provide Full Value Protection and Released Value Protection. You can discuss coverage with movers when getting a quote, including asking about additional insurance, or you can add a third-party insurer, particularly for valuable items.

Following these tips can help ease some of the stress, especially for a long-distance move. Keep in mind the beautiful homes in Woodbury MN that you’ll be moving into to help keep you motivated and excited about this new chapter in your life.
