Minnesota’s Green Path is the leading energy efficiency and green building program for the residential construction industry in the state. Designated Green Path Builders are considered industry leaders in energy-efficient residential home construction.

Minnesota’s Green Path program was created in 2011 by Housing First Minnesota. This third-party testing program provides performance reports for newly built homes. It focuses on RESNET’s Home Energy Rating System (HERS) index and air exchange rate. Minnesota’s average HERS number is 50, which is the lowest (the best) among the states that energy test more than 1,000 homes. Since 2011, the program has tested more than 39,000 new homes.

Part of the goal of Green Path is to help homeowners understand the energy efficiency of their home. Certifications reassure buyers, especially since most don’t know all of the specific features or products that can create a greener, more efficient home. As a result, with 40% of homebuyers wanting to support eco-friendly products, this program gives the confidence in choosing the home, and this kind of certification now ranks among the top green features of a home, along with high-efficiency HVAC, Energy Star appliances, and water-saving features.

In order to become a designated Green Path Builder, the builders must agree to test at least 75% of their newly built homes every year, as well as attend professional development events. There are advanced and master levels of Green Path certification.
