Don’t Get Caught in the Cold: Home Maintenance Tasks for a Smooth Winter

As we transition from the warm months of summer to the crisp coolness of fall, it’s important to take some time to perform some home maintenance tasks to ensure your home is ready for the upcoming winter months. Here are some tasks to consider for September and October:

– Check your fireplace and chimney, and service or clean if needed.
– Clean your range hood filter.
– Check and clean your mechanical ventilation system (HRV) according to the manual and manufacturer’s recommendations.
– Clean or replace your furnace/air-conditioning filters monthly or as recommended by the manufacturer.
– Clear air intakes, exhaust, and meters of debris, nests, or other obstructions.
– Have your furnace ducts cleaned if needed.
– Perform safety checks, including smoke detectors, fire escape routes, fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide alarms, and door and window locks.
– Check your gutters and downspouts, and clean if needed.
– Check your roofing and flashing, and repair any signs of wear or damage.
– Drain and close your outside hose connection.
– Winterize your landscaping and blow out your irrigation system.
– Inspect the pressure and temperature valve on your water heater.

Moving into November and December, it’s important to keep up with regular maintenance tasks to ensure your home is in top shape. Consider performing these tasks:

– Clean or replace your furnace/air-conditioning filters monthly or as recommended by the manufacturer.
– Check and clean your mechanical ventilation system (HRV) according to the manual and manufacturer’s recommendations.
– Check your exhaust fans.
– Clear air intakes, exhausts, and meters of snow, debris, or other obstructions.
– Remove excess snow from your roof to prevent ice dams.
